Do you need to secure and protect files on your Mac? FileVault is a built-in app that is integrated with the Mountain Lion operating system and allows you to easily encrypt your data.

With FileVault enabled the data on your Mac’s disk is encrypted and cannot be accessed in the event your computer is lost or stolen.

To enable FileVault, open System Preferences > select Security & Privacy > click the FileVault tab.

Select the “Turn On FileVault…” button to enable. You may have to unlock for the change to be possible by clicking on the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your Admin password.

Store your password in a secure location, because if you forget the password you will not be able to decrypt your data.
