Review: DropBox for iPhone

October 2, 2009 in Reviews by Bob Faulhaber

If you haven’t downloaded and installed DropBox on your Mac yet, you are missing out on one of the most useful “cloud”-based applications around today. DropBox gives you online storage letting you access your files from anywhere using their client or webpage from any computer.

Now DropBox has released their iPhone application that truly makes accessing your files on the go a piece of cake.

The DropBox iPhone app can be downloaded from the Apple iTunes App Store and once installed is easy to setup. When running DropBox the very first time you will be prompted if you are a current DropBox user or new to DropBox.

If you already have a DropBox, you will be prompted for your username and password, otherwise you’ll be prompted to create a new account.

Once authenticated and connected you will see all your files stored in DropBox, allowing you to view the file or create an email containing a link to the particular file.

The DropBox app also gives you the option to create a “favorite”, which will download a copy of the file and store it on your iPhone. This is a handy feature if you are not connected, but you are still limited with what you can do with the file.

The Settings menu gives basic information, such as the email associated with the DropBox account and space utilization. Also, if you ever want to unlink your iPhone from DropBox, there’s an easy to find button that does just that.

Having used DropBox for quite awhile to keep files in sync across my desktop and MacBook Pro, the addition of the iPhone app completes the toolbox and allows true mobile access to important files wherever you are.

If you haven’t tried DropBox, sign-up for an account at https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals/NTQ5NTQwOQ and download either the Mac, Windows or Linux client.
